Manually installing Google Analytics tag for WordPress

  1. First step is to login or register for a Google Analytics account.
  2. Once you have your account set up, click admin at the bottom left of the page
  3. Click Data Steams. If you haven’t already, you will need to set up a data stream by adding your domain
  4. Click on the data stream you just created and click on Global Site Tag, to display the code. Copy the code.
  5. Go to the admin of your WordPress website, click appearance then Theme Editor
  6. Once in the editor ensure you are editing your child theme as you don’t want to lose your edits when your theme releases an update.
  7. Look for the header element (header.php)
  8. Once you have the header.php file open it, and look for your closing header which will look like </head>
  9. Paste the code just above the closing header code
  10. Click update
  11. You’re done! Now go on your website and on another tab refresh your Analytics page go to reports > Real Time you should be able to see an active user.
